Explosive diarrhea. Crippling fatigue. A national cyclospora parasite outbreak hitting more than 18 states in America. Michigan's Cyclospora parasite outbreak just crossed 2,640 cases. That's over 50 times the state's typical annual count. Health officials still haven't identified the exact supplier. And most health coverage skips what it does to your nervous system through the gut-brain connection. This episode gives you the functional medicine recovery strategies that go beyond the antibiotic, so you repair your gut, reset your nervous system, and come back stronger. If you're tracking this outbreak, recovering from a gut infection, or just want to understand how parasites hijack more than your digestion, this one's for you.
New Normal Big Life Podcast host Antoinette Berrafato used nature therapy — archery and kayaking — to recover from physical limitations, finding passion, purpose, and people as a recipe for mental health. She brings this episode with a functional medicine foundation and 11 years of real world experience.

I'm your host, Antoinette Berafado, the Wellness Warrior. Let's get into today's topic.
Case Counts And Suspected Foods
SPEAKER_00As of early July 2026, the numbers are climbing fast. The CDC confirmed 140 domestic cases between May and June 2026. But state data tells a much bigger story. Michigan alone has over 700 cases with dozen of hospitalizations. At least 17 to 18 states are affected. No single source has been pinned down yet. The usual suspects, cilantro, basil, and lettuce briends and berries, people are searching for answers about the cyclospora parasite right now. What it is, how you catch it, and what do you do if you get sick. We're covering it
How Cyclospora Spreads
SPEAKER_00all. Cyclospora caintinesis is a microscopic protozoan that infects the lining of your small intestine. Here's the key thing most people miss. You don't catch this form from another person directly. The parasite is shed and stool as tiny, hardy structures, essentially parasite eggs. These ocytes need one to two weeks in warm temperatures to become infectious. That's why outbreaks are almost always linked to fecally contaminated food or water. Produce watch with contaminated water, berries handled by someone shedding the parasite, those are usually how it's spread. When you ingest those infectious ocytes, they travel to your small intestine. They release their contents and invade the cell lining your gut. This triggers inflammation, damages your villi, the finger-like structures that absorb nutrients, and causes the classic watery diarrhea. The incubation period is typically about one week, anywhere from two days to over two weeks. Most people never connect the symptoms to that salad or berry bowl for from days earlier.
Symptoms That Come In Waves
SPEAKER_00The hallmark symptom is profuse watery, often explosive diarrhea, frequent urgent bowel movements, and a restlessness feeling. Other common symptoms are stomach cramps or bloating, loss of appetite and weight loss, nausea. Vomiting is less common, but happens sometimes. And extreme fatigue that lingers, a low-grade fever, gas, and abdominal discomfort can be experienced. But here's the patterns doctors see. Symptoms wax and wane, they come and go. You feel a little better, then you crash again. And healthy adults, it's usually self-limiting but miserable. In immunocompromised people, it can become chronic and severe. Here's the empowering port. Most headlines skip. When
Immune Defense And Detox Pathways
SPEAKER_00your immune system is working properly, your body has sophisticated natural mechanisms to fight pathogens, whether parasites, viruses, or bacteria. And to detox the waste that they release. Your immune cells identify and attack the invader. Your lymphatic system, liver and kidneys work together as your internal detox team. The liver processes toxins, the kidneys filter them into urine, the lymphatics move waste out of your tissues. But here's what I want you to hear, and this is where our nervous system regulation pillar comes in. When a parasite like cyclospora triggers prolonged gut inflammation, it doesn't stay in your gut. The gut and brain are connected through the vagus nerve, a direct communication highway along the side of the neck. And chronic gut inflammation sends distress signals up that nerve, keeping your nervous system in a constant state of low-grade threat response. Your HPA axis, the hypothalmic pituitary adrenal axis, gets locked in a stress loop. Your body is fighting the infection and stuck in fight or flight at the same time. This is why some people recover quickly while others are wiped out for weeks. It's not just the parasite, it's how their nervous system handles the prolonged immune activation. The nervous system piece is not optional, it's central. The gold
Medical Treatment And Hydration Basics
SPEAKER_00standard medical treatment for this parasite, what your doctor might recommend, commonly known as Bactrim or SEPTRA. For most immunocompetent adults, healthy adults, it's one double strength tablet twice a day for seven to ten days. It dramatically shortens the illness and prevents relapses. Supportive care means hydration and electrolytes, and I'll tell you what's in my bottle in just a moment. Antidarrheals like Imodium can be used cautiously for symptom relief in some cases, but they're not first line because slowing gut motility can sometimes prolong the parasite stay inside your body. And that's what something like Imodium would do. It would slow down the movement inside your gut, making the parasite stay longer. Hydration and addressing the root cause comes first. Here's
Testing Tips Many Miss
SPEAKER_00the critical testing note. If you've had prolonged watery diarrhea, ask specifically for the cyclospora testing, many standard stool tests miss this. This is where functional medicine shines. We support the body's own healing while the medication, if needed, does its job. So
Functional Medicine Recovery Tools
SPEAKER_00for immune function, zinc is a powerhouse mineral for immune defense against parasites. Pair it with a natural carrier like an ionophore, like quercetin, a plant flavonoid or elderberry, which also has direct antiviral and immune modulating properties. Many people take zinc with quercetin or elderberry during acute illness and recovery. I take zinc and elderberry on a daily basis for total immune support. So for gut repair, parasitic infections damage the gut lining and disrupt beneficial bacteria. The key strategies are acacia fiber, a gentle prebiotic that feeds good bacteria and produces butyrate to repair the gut lining with less gas than many other fibers. Also, fermented foods like sauerkraut, kefir, and kimchi repopulate beneficial microbes after the infection. And turmeric or curcumin is a potent anti-inflammatory to calm gut inflammation.
Vagus Nerve And Nervous System Reset
SPEAKER_00For the nervous system reset, while your body clears the infection, give your nervous system the signal that it's safe. Gentle vagus nerve stimulation like massage, humming, gargling, and slow diaphragmatic breathing, breathing deeply into your hand, watching your belly rise and fall, five minutes of cold exposure at the end of your shower, and some somatic practices that tell your HPA axis that the threat is passing through. And these aren't extras. They accelerate gut period repair by shifting your body out of chronic stress mode. Other supportive practices like staying hydrated, eating easy to digest, nutrient-dense foods, quality sleep, and gentle movement can all benefit your healing. So, walking, for example, to benefit lymphatic drainage. These steps don't replace medical care. They work alongside to help you recover completely and reduce the chance of lingering gut and nervous system issues. So
Prevention During An Outbreak
SPEAKER_00here's how you can prevent a parasitic infection. Wash all produce thoroughly under running water. Scrub firm items like oranges and peppers, for example. Consider a vinegar and baking soda soak or produce wash. Peel vegetables if possible. Cook your vegetables during high-risk windows like right now, and practice good hygiene washing hands thoroughly after using the bathroom or handling produce. During outbreaks, be extra cautious with salads, fresh herbs, and berries from unknown sources. This is where ancestral wisdom meets modern life. Our great grandparents knew to be careful with water and food preparation. We can reclaim that vigilance without fear in our modern kitchens today. The Cyclospora parasite is a reminder that our modern food system has vulnerabilities, but our bodies are incredibly resilient when we give them the right support. Whether you're dealing with this right now, recovering, or simply building stronger immunity and nervous system resilience. Focus on the fundamentals, hydration, and be sure to use my affiliate link to get my favorite electrolyte product, and I'll tell you more about it in a moment. I take this on a daily basis because I exercise often, and hydration and electrolyte balance is great for your metabolic system and preventing headaches. But especially it's good when you're fighting off an illness. You want to have targeted nutrition during this time. So feed your body nutrient-dense foods and repair your gut with something like acacia powder. This is also a great preventative. Remember your nervous system regulation techniques.
