New Normal Big Life: Functional Medicine and Holistic Health for Veterans, First Responders, and Caregivers
New Normal Big Life is a functional medicine and holistic health podcast for veterans, first responders, blue-collar workers, and caregivers who feel their minds and bodies slipping after years of stress and hard work.
Hosted by TBI survivor and former Army medic Antoinette Berrafato, also known as The Wellness Warrior, this show brings doctors, functional medicine clinicians, naturopaths, and researchers into plain-language conversations about nervous system regulation, caregiver burnout, root cause medicine, veteran mental health, holistic nutrition, and what it actually takes to reclaim your health after years of stress, service, and survival.
We cover the full world of functional and natural health: root cause medicine and how it differs from the conventional care that keeps brushing you off, nervous system regulation and trauma recovery for people whose bodies have been running on high alert for years, caregiver burnout and what recovery actually looks like, TBI and brain health after military service and injury, holistic nutrition and natural protocols for chronic illness, and disaster preparedness as a health practice.
This show answers questions like:
- What is functional medicine, and how is it different from conventional care?
- Why am I always tired, no matter how much I sleep?
- What causes chronic inflammation, and how do I fix it naturally?
- How do I regulate my nervous system after trauma or prolonged stress?
- What are the signs of caregiver burnout, and how do I recover?
- Why does my doctor keep telling me my labs are normal when I feel terrible?
- What natural treatments actually help with TBI recovery?
- How do veterans and first responders get real mental health support that isn't just therapy-speak?
If you want real answers, plain language, and a host who has lived it, you are in the right place.

The Comparison Spiral
SPEAKER_00You're doom scrolling social media, desperately avoiding that one post, the Valentine's Day romance overload from women in love, flaunting gifts, dinners, and selfies that scream, I've got it all. You planned a break from love season all starting February 1st, but you barely survive the holidays seeing peers your age with adorable kids and devoted husbands and those picture-perfect Christmas photos while you're still searching for your person. It nearly plunged you into a deep, dark depression. And then it hits. You can't look away. Your favorite health and wellness podcaster is engaged. That stunning 2.5 karat emerald cut ring, slink by two quarter carat emerald cut diamonds, the beaming couple, the epic winter wonderland proposal story. Something inside you shatters. Where's my Matthew? My perfect proposal, my beautiful ring. You wonder with tears streaming with pure hopelessness. That's exactly when my own engagement post unleashed a torrent of anxious DMs, hopeful texts, tearful calls, virtual meetings with friends, and total strangers. How did you do it? How did you meet someone these days? How did you get him to propose? Did you have to pick the ring? But the women who felt the most hopeless, the tearful ones I barely knew or didn't know at all, revealed something profound in their tales of abandonment, breakups, and longing. They all wanted love and commitment from a good man, but unconsciously, they didn't like men. It slipped out. Don't get me started on what I think about men. You don't even want to know what I think about men. It haunted me. It kept me up nights. It worried me deeply. It's been nearly a decade since they've encountered a good one they said. And that's the core problem. You cannot attract what you don't like. Period. Full stop. This isn't isolated. It's an epidemic of loneliness and deaths of despair. And it's not just you or these women. Data backs it up. A Morgan Stanley forecast predicts that by 2030, 45% of women aged 25 to 44 will be single, fueled by economic independence, delayed milestones, misandry, and prioritizing self-fulfillment over partnerships, often creating unseen barriers to connection. A 2025 Rasmussen poll shows 37% of single adults under 30, mostly Gen Z, have quit dating altogether, exhausted by the process, and it's feeding into widespread isolation. And the toll 73% of Gen Z feel lonely sometimes or always worsened by social media comparisons and post-pandemic disconnects. Millions of millennial and Gen C women are in the same cycle of despair. But when women share men or trash content online for that quick hit of validation and community cred, it spreads like wildfire, reinforcing distrust and adding fuel to the very loneliness epidemic you're all feeling. Remember, you cannot attract what you don't like. That's when it struck me. Helping you meet, date, and build a forever life. So for my fellow wellness warriors, I've launched the Let's Get You Married podcast series. Through episodes, I'll guide you through my new normal big life process, coaching you to craft a fresh, normal around love, relationships, and partnering. You'll build your big romantic life and draw in your perfect someone. And here's the secret everything you need to attract your ideal partner already resides inside you. But you cannot attract what you don't like. I got you. Together, we'll revitalize your inner glow, rekindle your inner vitality, and reactivate your love magnet. Once we do, finding love won't require effort. It'll simply happen. I walk this path myself. In the Colorado backcountry, whitewater kayaking and camping with over 50 people, half women, I met Matthew. We connected as friends, dated, fell in love, and now we're crafting our beautiful life in a cabin by the river in a midwestern northwoods forest. This might not be your dream, but we'll tell you your new normal so you can live the biggest life imaginable with a person who's been looking for someone just like you. Or at least the best version of you. And I'll be with you all the way to your wedding day. To ensure this reaches women truly ready for change, I am placing the rest of the Let's Get You Married series behind an exclusive paywall. It's for the dedicated, those investing in turning on their inner glow to magnetize love. Starting at a minimal$3 monthly subscription, less than a coffee, you'll unlock premium episodes, downloadable worksheets, group Zoom coaching, and a monthly free one-on-one Zoom session for our most engaged members. But it's capped. Limited access to foster a tight-knit supportive sisterhood where real breakthroughs happen. If you're benefiting from this vibe and content, feel free to contribute more. This isn't for the casual listeners, but for those committed to the work because you cannot attract what you don't like. Okay, sister, dry those eyes, grab a journal and a quality pen. Let's get you married. I'm your host, Antoinette Lee, the Wellness Warrior. Let's get into today's topic.

Today’s Focus: Magnesium
SPEAKER_01Magnesium, an unsung hero, fuels over 300 bodily reactions from heart health to stress relief. Magnesium expert Natalie Girado, founder of Rooted In, found freedom from anxiety, insomnia, and pain through topical magnesium. It transformed my life, she says, inspiring her mission to share this mineral's power. Cardiologist Dr. Jack Wolfson calls magnesium essential for heart health, helping regulate rhythms, blood sugar, and reduce inflammation. Up to 80% of people may be deficient facing issues like depression, migraines, insomnia, or muscle crail. For women over 40, magnesium eases menopause symptoms, boosts energy, and supports bones. Choosing the correct type of magnesium matters. Real stories, Natalie's in mind, highlight its impact. After interviewing magnesium expert Natalie Durado, I became a customer. I was already a magnesium fan, having been told by two cardiologists to take magnesium for a minor heart arrhythmia. Natalie explains it best in the Magnesium, the Mineral Transforming Lives episode of New Normal Big Life podcast. Fast forward after the interview, I bought the Rooted Inn bundle for sleep, tranquility, and pain relief. As a spine injury survivor with several other health challenges, I'm in constant pain. However, I don't take any pain medication. Rooted in is now one more source that nature provided to give our bodies what it needs when it needs it. You can find magnesium in natural bodies of water like lakes and rivers and in soil. But modern farming practices have stripped magnesium out of the soil and our food. That's why today, Rooted Inn's rest, relief, and tranquility are part of our afternoon and nightly sleep routine. My guy who did two tours kicking indoors in Iraq with the Marines now has no trouble falling asleep. I no longer have to take melatonin before bedtime to fall asleep. So after I became a customer and saw how well these products work, I applied to become an affiliate. I've been sharing the secrets of rooted in with friends and family from age 38 to 68, and everyone has gotten amazing results within minutes of applying the cream. Do something naturally good for yourself. Get rooted in. Click my affiliate link in the episode description to shop now.
